Euclides Netto — Blue Flame

Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. April 2018. Euclides is a restaurant owner, entrepreneur, and cutlery collector. Restaurante Rosário is a 70 year old family business and the first restaurant to open in Campiñas, Brasil. Praised by the locals, this culinary experience indulges you with the nostalgic flavors of a Brazilian childhood. For many, Restaurante Rosário is noted as a symbol of heritage in Campinas.

When Euclides isn't running a restaurant you can find him with his knives. Importing, sharpening, and commissioning, Euclides is a true collector of all things that cut and the tools that make them shaving sharp. Over the years, he has had hundreds of knives pass through his hands. While aiding other collectors to expand their culinary showrooms, he’s secretly been searching for a unicorn of his own. But then one day, he found it! The Itsuo Doi 240mm Gyuto.

It was at that moment when Euclides contacted me to transform his Doi into a work of art. No guidelines were given, other than to follow my heart and let it speak to me.

After some consideration I decided to honor the blacksmith with a handle representative of a deconstructed flame and a saya of abstract smoke. This unicorn is on fire! Born from a blacksmith and enriched by a craftsman, the flame of the handle is patient while the smoke in the saya is dancing through wisps and curls.

Handle materials include: black dyed black ash burl ferrule, black acrylic, red, yellow, & blue fiberboard, yellow dyed spalted birch spacers, blue dyed poplar burl body, yellow fiberboard and cat eye acrylic spacers, and a blue dyed cascara burl end cap. Phew! That's 14 layers of goodness!

Saya materials include: Curly Texas Mesquite with rare earth magnets embedded along the spine.
